Stand in the court of the house of the LORD
and speak to the people of all the cities of Judah
who come to worship in the house of the LORD;
whatever I command you, tell them, and omit nothing.
Perhaps they will listen and turn back,
each from his evil way,
so that I may repent of the evil I have planned to inflict upon them
for their evil deeds.

Is not his mother named Mary

Meditation: "They
took offense at Jesus"
Are you critical
towards others, especially those who are close to you? The most severe critics
are often people very familiar to us, a member of our family, a relative,
neighbor, student, or worker we rub shoulders with on a regular basis. Jesus
faced a severe testing when he returned to his home town, not simply as the
carpenter's son, but now as a rabbi with disciples. It would have been
customary for Jesus to go to the synagogue each week during the Sabbath, and
when his turn came, to read from the scriptures during the Sabbath service. His
hometown folks listened with rapt attention on this occasion because they had
heard about the miracles he had performed in other towns.
What sign would he
do in his hometown? Jesus startled them with a seeming rebuke that no prophet
or servant of God can receive honor among his own people. The people of
Nazareth took offense at him and refused to listen to what he
had to say. They despised his preaching because he was a carpenter from the
working class, and a mere layman untrained by religious scholars. They also
despised him because of his family background. After all, Joseph was a
tradesman as well and Mary had no special social distinctions.
Familiarity breeds
contempt
How easily familiarity breeds contempt. Jesus could do no mighty works in his hometown because the people who were familiar with him were closed-minded and despised his claim to speak and act in the name of God. If people come together to hate and refuse to understand others different than themselves, then they will see no other point of view than their own and they will refuse to love and accept others. How do you view those who are familiar to you? With kindness and respect or with a critical and judgmental spirit?

The Lord Jesus
offers us freedom from sin, prejudice, contempt, and fear. His love and grace
sets us free to love others with the same grace and mercy which he has shown to
us. Only Jesus can truly set us free from the worst tyranny possible - slavery
to sin and the fear of death. His victory on the cross brings us pardon and
healing, and the grace to live holy lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. Do
you know the joy and freedom which Christ's love brings to our hearts?

Introductory
Prayer: Lord, I believe in your power. I know that you are the
Lord of all history. I trust that you are guiding my life. Thank you for
showing me that you will triumph. Thank you for the triumph you have already
achieved in my heart and in the hearts of so many people. I want to allow you
to have total control over my life.
Petition: Lord,
increase my faith in you.
1. Too Much
Familiarity: The people of Nazareth thought they knew all about
Jesus. He had grown up among them. Apparently they had not seen anything
extraordinary about him before he started his public ministry. They thought
he was just like everyone else. So when they hear that he is doing miracles
and teaching with authority, they do not believe it. Sometimes I also run the
danger of putting limits on Christ’s power in my life. I see the unimpressive
circumstances of my life and the recurrence of the same old problems. I do
not believe that Christ can do something supernatural in the midst of an
ordinary situation. Today I am receiving an invitation to step beyond the
routine and believe more deeply in the power of Christ.
2. An Unwelcome
Prophet: The solution to their deepest problems was in their own
backyard. Yet, the people of Nazareth felt that such a familiar figure could
not bring anything extraordinary. When the Church sometimes challenges me
with some of her teachings – on charity, on family life, on the need to be a
courageous witness –, do I sometimes find excuses, like saying that my circumstances
are too difficult, or the Church does not understand my situation? Do I
sometimes let the prophetic voice of the Church die in my heart? When I feel
challenged by the Gospel and by the Church I should be thankful. Christ is
inviting me to discover the deepest meaning of my life. He is giving me a
chance to allow his presence to make a deep change in my life. He is allowing
me to discover him in faith and is taking me beyond my comfort zone to the
level of the coming of his Kingdom.
3. A Miracle Worker in Waiting: What sort of miracles does Christ want to do in my life? Christ has a plan to make my life a luminous witness to the power of his grace. He wants to fill my life with his holiness and help me be a light for others. If I can shake off my superficiality and lack of faith, I will discover the powerful presence of the Savior who helps me live each moment with depth and love. He can do miracles in my life. He can help me live the virtues which are most costly for me. Am I willing to take a risk for Christ and trust him totally?
Conversation with
Christ: Lord, I know you want to do great things in my life.
Help me to see how you can transform the ordinary, seemingly unimportant
circumstances of my day into moments when your grace triumphs. Enable me to
be docile to your Holy Spirit, so he can do miracles in my life.
Resolution: I will
increase my faith in Christ by taking a risk for him in some aspect of my
spiritual or apostolic life.

KEY VERSE: "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house" (v 57).
READING: Chapters 13:54 ̶ 17:27 of Matthew's gospel have been given the title: "The Kingdom of God and the Church." God's kingdom was clearly visible in the person of Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Man. When Jesus finished his teachings in the towns around the Lake of Galilee, he returned to Nazareth where he was raised. His neighbors were astonished by his teaching and mighty deeds, but they were also skeptical. Jesus was a "hometown boy," and they took offense at his presumption in telling them how to live their lives. Jesus was rejected like the prophets before him. Because his neighbors lacked faith in him, he was unable to perform many miracles there.
REFLECTING: Do I see God at work among my friends and neighbors?
PRAYING: Lord Jesus, help me to be open to hearing truth from the teachings of the Church.

of Alphonsus Liguori, bishop and doctor of the Church
Alphonsus Liguori was ordained at age 29. He was noted for his simple, clear style of preaching, and his understanding way in the confessional. He was often opposed by Church officials for a perceived laxity toward sinners. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Liguorians or Redemptorists). Alphonsus was appointed bishop in 1762, and worked to reform the clergy and revitalize the faithful in a diocese. In 1775 he resigned his office due to his health, and went into what he thought was a prayerful retirement. In 1777 the royal government threatened to disband his Redemptorists. Calling on his knowledge of theology, and his skills as a lawyer, Alphonsus defended the Redemptorists so well that they obtained the king's approval. Alphonsus was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871.

Moral
theology, Vatican II said, should be more thoroughly nourished by Scripture,
and show the nobility of the Christian vocation of the faithful and their
obligation to bring forth fruit in charity for the life of the world.
Alphonsus, declared patron of moral theologians by Pius XII in 1950, would
rejoice in that statement.
In his
day, Alphonsus fought for the liberation of moral theology from the
rigidity of Jansenism. His moral theology, which went through 60 editions in
the century following him, concentrated on the practical and concrete problems
of pastors and confessors. If a certain legalism and minimalism crept into
moral theology, it should not be attributed to this model of moderation and
gentleness.
At the
University of Naples he received, at the age of 16, a doctorate in both canon
and civil law by acclamation, but she oon gave up the practice of law for
apostolic activity. He was ordained a priest and concentrated his pastoral
efforts on popular (parish) missions, hearing confessions, forming Christian
groups.
He
founded the Redemptorist congregation in 1732. It was an association of priests
and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, and
working mainly in popular missions for peasants in rural areas. Almost as an
omen of what was to come later, he found himself deserted, after a while, by
all his original companions except one lay brother. But the congregation
managed to survive and was formally approved 17 years later, though its
troubles were not over.
Alphonsus’
great pastoral reforms were in the pulpit and confessional—replacing the
pompous oratory of the time with simplicity, and the rigorism of Jansenism with
kindness. His great fame as a writer has somewhat eclipsed the fact that for 26
years he traveled up and down the Kingdom of Naples, preaching popular
missions.
He was
made bishop (after trying to reject the honor) at 66 and at once instituted a
thorough reform of his diocese.
His
greatest sorrow came toward the end of his life. The Redemptorists,
precariously continuing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, had
difficulty in getting their Rule approved by the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus
acceded to the condition that they possess no property in common, but a royal
official, with the connivance of a high Redemptorist official, changed the Rule
substantially. Alphonsus, old, crippled and with very bad sight, signed the
document, unaware that he had been betrayed. The Redemptorists in the Papal
States then put themselves under the pope, who withdrew those in Naples from
the jurisdiction of Alphonsus. It was only after his death that the branches
were united.
At 71 he
was afflicted with rheumatic pains which left incurable bending of his neck;
until it was straightened a little, the pressure of his chin caused a raw wound
on his chest. He suffered a final 18 months of “dark night” scruples, fears,
temptations against every article of faith and every virtue, interspersed with
intervals of light and relief, when ecstasies were frequent.
Alphonsus
is best known for his moral theology, but he also wrote well in the field of
spiritual and dogmatic theology. His Glories of Mary is one of
the great works on that subject, and his book Visits to the Blessed
Sacrament went through 40 editions in his lifetime, greatly
influencing the practice of this devotion in the Church.
Comment:
St. Alphonsus was known above all as a practical man who dealt in the concrete rather than the abstract. His life is indeed a “practical” model for the everyday Christian who has difficulty recognizing the dignity of Christian life amid the swirl of problems, pain, misunderstanding and failure. Alphonsus suffered all these things. He is a saint because he was able to maintain an intimate sense of the presence of the suffering Christ through it all.

2) Gospel Reading - Matthew 13,54-58

synagogue in such a way that they were astonished and said, 'Where did the man
get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? This is the carpenter's son,
surely? Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and
Joseph and Simon and Jude? His sisters, too, are they not all here with us? So
where did the man get it all?' And they would not accept him. But Jesus said to
them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country and in his own house,' and

3) Reflection
• The Gospel today tells us the visit of Jesus to Nazareth, his
native community. Passing through Nazareth was painful for Jesus. What was his
community at the beginning, now it is no longer so. Something has changed.
Where there is no faith, Jesus can work no miracles.
• Matthew 13, 53-57ª: The reaction of the people of Nazareth before Jesus. It is always good for people to go back to their land. After a long absence, Jesus also returns, as usual, on a Saturday, and he goes to the meeting of the community. Jesus was not the head of the group, but just the same he speaks. This is a sign that persons could participate and express their own opinion. People were astonished. They did not understand Jesus’ attitude: "Where did the man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” Jesus, son of that place, whom they knew since he was a child, how is that now he is so different? The people of Nazareth were scandalized and do not accept him: “This is the carpenter’s son, surely? The people do not accept the mystery of God present in a common man as they are, as they had known Jesus. In order to speak about God he should be different. As one can see, not everything was positive. The persons, who should have been the first ones to accept the Good News, are the first ones to refuse to accept it. The conflict is not only with foreigners, but also with his relatives and with the people of Nazareth. They do not accept because they cannot understand the mystery envelops Jesus: “Is not his mother, the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude? And his sisters too, are they not all here with us? So where did the man get it all?” They are not able to believe.
• Matthew 13, 57b-58: Reaction of Jesus before the attitude of the people of Nazareth. Jesus knows very well that “no one is a prophet in his own country”. And he says: A prophet is despised only in his own country and in his own house”. In fact, where there is neither acceptance nor faith, people can do nothing. The prejudice prevents it. Jesus himself, even wanting, can do nothing. He was astonished before their lack of faith.
• The brothers and sisters of Jesus. The expression “brothers of Jesus” causes much polemics between Catholics and Protestants. Basing themselves in this and in other texts, the Protestants say that Jesus had many brothers and sisters and that Mary had more children! Catholics say that Mary did not have any other children. What can we think about this? In the first place, both positions, that of Catholics as well as that of Protestants, contain arguments taken from the Bible and from the Tradition of their respective Churches. For this reason, it is not convenient to discuss this question with arguments which are only intellectual, because it is a question of profound convictions, which have something to do with faith and with the sentiments of both and of each one. The argument which is only intellectual cannot change a conviction of the heart! It only irritates and draws away! Even if I do not agree with the opinion of others, I have to respect it. In the second place, instead of discussing around texts, all of us, Catholics and Protestants, should unite ourselves much more to fight for the defence of life, created by God, a life so disfigured by poverty, injustice, lack of faith. We should recall some other phrases of Jesus. “I have come so that they may have life and life to the full” (Jn 10, 10). “That all may be one, so that the world may believe that you, Father, has sent me” (Jn 17, 21). “Do not prevent them! Anyone who is not against us is for us” (Mk 10, 39.40)
