Fr
Lombardi reflects on the Pope’s visit to CAR
(Vatican
Radio) Pope Francis anticipated the official opening of the Jubilee Year of
Mercy in Rome on 8th December as he inaugurated the Jubilee in Bangui cathedral
in the Central African Republic.
Fr
Lombardi explained how the mercy of God and the close relationship between man
and God are central aspects of Pope Francis’ ministry. This is why the Holy
Father’s momentous gesture in Bangui cathedral is of such special significance:
“to begin the Year of Mercy in a poor land, in need of mercy, pardon,
reconciliation, love… is a strong message for Africa and the world”.
Concerns
surrounding Pope Francis’ visit to CAR were pointless: Fr Lombardi says he
“never doubted” the Pope would visit CAR. Reflecting on the Pope’s visit to the
central mosque in Bangui, Fr Lombardi said it was symbolic of his search for
inter-religious dialogue.
The
Pope said during his visit to CAR “Today Bangui is the spiritual capital of the
world… the Holy Year of Mercy begins earlier in this land that has suffered for
many years as a result of war, hatred, misunderstanding and a lack of peace.”
