(Vatican Radio) The Archbishop of Malta, Charles Scicluna, has condemned the murder of Daphne Caruana Galicia, the journalist and Maltese blogger who was killed on Monday by a car bomb near her home in Bidnija, Malta.
Fifteen days ago she had filed a complaint with the police after receiving death threats.
The journalist had  exposed the island nation's links to offshore tax havens through the leaked Panama Papers.
Reacting to the killing, the Archbishop said,  “I forcefully condemn the obscene murder which took place today. The loss of Daphne Caruana Galizia fills us with sadness and determination to continue defending democracy until the very end.”
He continued, “this is not a time to wage war between us or to blame one another. As a people we must wake up, defend the dignity of each one of us, and stop the verbal attacks on each other. We must defend the central value of democracy by moving from words to actions.”
Archbishop Scicluna concluded by saying, “ I pray for the soul of this victim and her family, and extend my solidarity to all journalists. I encourage you to defend the truth, to be afraid of no one and to be servants of the people and democracy.”
