Beloved:
This is the message you have heard from the beginning:
we should love one another,
unlike Cain who belonged to the Evil One
and slaughtered his brother.
Why did he slaughter him?
Because his own works were evil,
and those of his brother righteous.
Do not be amazed, then, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
We know that we have passed from death to life
because we love our brothers.
Whoever does not love remains in death.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer,
and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.
The way we came to know love
was that he laid down his life for us;
so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
If someone who has worldly means
sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion,
how can the love of God remain in him?

Jesus decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip.
And Jesus said to him, "Follow me."
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and told him,
"We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
But Nathanael said to him,
"Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

are the eyes which see what you see!"
How does God bring his kingdom to us? Jesus remarked
that many prophets and kings before him longed to see and understand God's plan
for establishing his kingdom. When King David's throne was overthrown and
vacant for centuries, God promised, nonetheless, to raise up a new king from
the stump of Jesse, the father of David. This messianic king would rule forever
because the Spirit of God would rest upon him and remain with him (Isaiah 11:1).
The Messiah King is anointed with divine wisdom and
gifts of the Spirit
Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be equipped with the gifts of the Spirit - with wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2 - for an explanation of the gifts see this helpful article). This king would establish the kingdom of God, not by force of human will and military power, but by offering his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world. Through his death on the cross, Jesus, the true Messiah King, would defeat Satan, overcome death, and win pardon and reconciliation for sinners. God's plan of redemption included not only the Jewish people but all the nations of the earth as well. Through his death and resurrection Jesus makes us citizens of heaven and friends of God. The Lord Jesus wants us to live in joyful hope and confident expectation that he will come again to fully establish his kingdom of righteousness and peace.

What does Jesus' prayer (Luke 10:21-22) tell us about

earth as well as heaven. He is both Creator and Author of all that he has made,
the first origin of everything and transcendent authority, and at the same
time, goodness and loving care for all his children. All fatherhood and
motherhood are derived from him (Ephesians 3:14-15). Jesus' prayer also
contains a warning that pride can keep us from the love and knowledge of God.
The Lord opposes the proud but gives wisdom and
understanding to the humble

Simplicity of heart is wedded with humility, the queen
of virtues, because humility inclines the heart towards grace and truth. Just
as pride is the root of every sin and evil we can conceive, so humility is the
only soil in which the grace of God can take root. It alone takes the right
attitude before God and allows him as God to do all. "God opposes the
proud, but gives grace to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34, James 4:6). The
grace of Christ-like humility inclines us towards God and disposes us to
receive God's wisdom, grace, and help. Nothing can give us greater joy than the
knowledge that we are God's beloved and that our names are written in heaven
(Luke 10:20). Do you seek God's wisdom and grace with humility and trust?
Through Christ we can personally know the Father and
be united with him

Our knowledge of God is not simply limited to knowing something about God - who he is and what he is like. We can know God personally and be united with him in a relationship of love, trust, and friendship. Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our Father. To see Jesus is to see what God is like. In Jesus we see the perfect love of God - a God who cares intensely and who yearns over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the cross. Do you pray to your Father in heaven with joy and confidence in his love and care for you?

KEY VERSE: "Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him" (v.47).
TO KNOW: Nathanael (called "Bartholomew" in the synoptic gospels) was skeptical when Philip told him that Jesus was the promised Messiah of God. The scriptures said that the messiah would come from David's city, Bethlehem in Judah (Mi 5:1), and not from a lowly place like Nazareth in Galilee. Philip invited Nathanael to come and judge for himself. Jesus overcame Nathanael's doubts by a demonstration of supernatural knowledge, knowing his thoughts and actions: "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree" (Jn 1:48). Jesus said that Nathanael was guileless, a "true Israelite" like Jacob, the first to bear the name "Israel" (Gn 32:29). Even though Jacob was a man of deception, he witnessed angelic beings ascending and descending to heaven (Gn 28:12). Nathanael would see even greater things in the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

John Neumann, a German, studied theology at Prague in 1833. When the time came for his ordination there was an over-abundance of priests. John decided to go to America to ask for ordination. He arrived unannounced in Manhattan in 1836. The Bishop was happy to see him as there were only 36 priests for the 200,000 Catholics in New York and New Jersey. John was ordained on 28 June 1836, and sent to Buffalo. There the parish priest, Father Pax, gave him the choice of the city of Buffalo or the rural area. John chose the more difficult country area. His parishioners were from many lands, but John knew twelve languages, and worked with them all. He joined the Redemptorists, taking his vows at Baltimore, Maryland in 1841, the first Redemptorist to do so in the United States. He became Bishop of Philadelphia in 1852. John Neumann was the first American bishop to be canonized.

‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’
Thank goodness Nathaniel was convinced to come and see for
himself. But what if he hadn’t? what if he had stayed in his comfort zone and
continued to judge Nazarenes? He would have missed out on so much.
In the same vein, do we prejudge people, experiences, places? Of
course, we do and regularly for many of us. Just the other day, I walked to the
bus stop and saw a girl already there. I immediately thought, ‘Oh, she looks a
bit scary, I hope she doesn’t talk to me’.
Then I realised I had forgotten my purse. I ran home to get it
(luckily the bus stop is outside my house). I came back and she had asked the
bus driver to wait for me. It was a lesson for me, simple and crystal clear.
ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE NEUMANN
John Neumann was born on March 28, 1811, in Bohemia, now part of
the Czech Republic. His parents were Philip and Agnes Neumann. He had four
sisters and a brother. After college, John entered the seminary. When the time
came for his ordination, the bishop was sick and the date was never rescheduled
as Bohemia had enough priests at the time. Since he had been reading about
missionary activities in the United States, John decided to go to America and
request to be ordained there. He walked most of the way to France and then
boarded a ship to New York.
John
arrived in Manhattan on June 9, 1836, where he was gladly welcomed by Bishop
John Dubois, who at that time had only 36 priests for the 200,000
Catholics living in the state of New York and part of New Jersey. Just 16 days
after his arrival, John was ordained a priest and sent to Buffalo.
Father
John established himself in a small log parish house. He hardly ever lit a fire
and often lived on only bread and water. He joined the Redemptorist order and
continued his missionary work until he was elected bishop of Philadelphia in
1852. As bishop, Neumann built 50 churches and began the constuction of a
cathedral. He opened almost 100 schools, and the number of parochial school
students grew from 500 to 9,000. He died suddenly on January 5, 1860.
He
became the first American bishop to be beatified. He was canonized by Pope Paul
VI on June 19, 1977. He is buried in St. Peter the Apostle Church in
Philadelphia.

1,43-51
The next day, after Jesus had decided to
leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.' Philip came from the
same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him,
'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and the prophets wrote, Jesus son
of Joseph, from Nazareth.' Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything
good come from that place?' Philip replied, 'Come and see.'
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said
of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is no deception.'
Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to
call you, I saw you under the fig tree.' Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are
the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.' Jesus replied, 'You believe that
just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to see greater
things than that.'
And then he added, 'In all truth I tell
you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending
over the Son of man.'
3) REFLECTION
• Jesus returned to Galilee. He met
Philip and called him telling him: “Follow me!” The purpose of the call is
always the same: “to follow Jesus”. The first Christians sought to preserve the
names of the first disciples, and of some they even kept their family names and
the name of their place of origin. Philip, Andrew and Peter were from Bethsaida
(Jn 1, 44). Nathanael was from Cana. Today many forget the names of the persons
who were at the origin of their communities. To remember the names is a way of
preserving the identity.
• Philip meets Nathanael and speaks to
him about Jesus: “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets
wrote, Jesus, son of Joseph from Nazareth”. Jesus is the one to whom all the
history of the Old Testament refers.
• Nathanael asks: “From Nazareth? Can
anything good come from that place?” Probably, even in his question there was
some of the rivalry which existed among the small villages of the same region:
Cana and Nazareth. Besides, according to the official teaching of the Scribes,
the Messiah would come from Bethlehem, in Judah. He could not come from
Nazareth in Galilee (Jn 7, 41-42). Philip gives the same answer which Jesus had
given to the other two disciples: “Come and see for yourself!” It is not by
imposing, but rather by seeing that persons are convinced. Once again the same
way: to meet, to experience, to share, to witness, to lead toward Jesus!
• Jesus sees Nathanael and says: “Truly,
he is an Israelite in whom there is no deception”. And affirms that he already
knew him when he was under the fig tree. How could Nathanael be an “authentic
or true Israelite” if he did not accept Jesus as the Messiah? Nathanael “was
under the fig tree”. The fig tree was the symbol of Israel (cf. Mi 4, 4; Zc 3,
10; 1 Kg 5,5). An authentic Israelite is the one who knows how to detach
himself from his own ideas when he perceives that they are not in agreement
with God’s project. The Israelite who is not ready to bring about this
conversion is neither authentic nor honest. Nathanael is authentic. He was
waiting for the Messiah according to the official teaching of the time (Jn 7,
41-42.52). This is why at the beginning, he did not accept a Messiah coming
from Nazareth. But the encounter with Jesus helped him to understand that God’s
project is not always as people imagine or desire that it be. He recognizes,
acknowledges his deception or mistake, he changes his idea, accepts God as
Messiah and confesses: “Rabi, you are the Son of God: you are the King of
Israel !” The confession of Nathanael is only at the beginning: The one who
will be faithful will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and
descending over the Son of man. He will experience that Jesus is the new bond
of union between God and us, human beings. It is the dream of Jacob which has
become a reality (Gen 28, 10-22).
