Lectionary:
13
For Zion's sake I will not be silent,
for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet,
until her vindication shines forth like the dawn
and her victory like a burning torch.
Nations shall behold your vindication,
and all the kings your glory;
you shall be called by a new name
pronounced by the mouth of the LORD.
You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD,
a royal diadem held by your God.
No more shall people call you "Forsaken,"
or your land "Desolate,"
but you shall be called "My Delight,"
and your land "Espoused."
For the LORD delights in you
and makes your land his spouse.
As a young man marries a virgin,
your Builder shall marry you;
and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride
so shall your God rejoice in you.
for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet,
until her vindication shines forth like the dawn
and her victory like a burning torch.
Nations shall behold your vindication,
and all the kings your glory;
you shall be called by a new name

1 Is 9:1-6
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster
you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.
For every boot that tramped in battle,
every cloak rolled in blood,
will be burned as fuel for flames.
For a child is born to us, a son is given us;
upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast
and forever peaceful,
from David's throne, and over his kingdom,
which he confirms and sustains
by judgment and justice,
both now and forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,

Gospel Jn
1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light,
so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.
But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man's decision
but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,

From his fullness we have all received,
grace in place of grace,
because while the law was given through Moses,
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God.
The only Son, God, who is at the Father's side,
has revealed him.
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man's decision
but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father's only Son,
full of grace and truth.

Nativity of the Lord
This Sunday we celebrate the Nativity of
Jesus, the Lord, as we always do on December 25. Today the readings call upon
us to consider the real meaning of Christmas. The first reading originally
spoke of Israel 's
return from exile but Christians have always applied it to Christ's coming. The
second reading presents Jesus as the complete revelation of the Father come to
earth. The gospel reading is taken from an early hymn that tries to express
what Jesus' coming means to us. These reading form the question in my mind: Am
I one of "those who did accept him?" Can anyone tell by watching me?
Traditionally there are three masses on
Christmas Day and each has it's own set of readings. The readings presented
here are from the Mass During the Day, which is probably the one that most
people will attend. The others are:
Mass at Midnight: Isaiah 9: 1-6; Psalm 96: 1-2. 2-3. 11-12. 13; Titus 2: 11-14; Luke 2: 1-14.
Mass at Dawn: Isaiah 62: 11-12; Psalm 97: 1. 6. 11-12; Titus 3: 4-7; Luke 2: 15-20.
Mass at Midnight: Isaiah 9: 1-6; Psalm 96: 1-2. 2-3. 11-12. 13; Titus 2: 11-14; Luke 2: 1-14.
Mass at Dawn: Isaiah 62: 11-12; Psalm 97: 1. 6. 11-12; Titus 3: 4-7; Luke 2: 15-20.
NOTES on First Reading :
* 52:7-10 These verses were originally
meant to refer to God leading his people back from Babylon
to Zion . Here
excitement rings out as the messenger of good news is announced. See 40:9 and 2
Sam 18:19-33. A similar enthronement of Yahweh is found in Ps 47; 93; 96-99.
* 52:8 It was from the ruined walls of Zion that
"watchmen...shout for joy." See Romans 10:15.
* 52:9-10 These verses are a thanksgiving
hymn in response to the messenger. See Zeph 3:13-18 and Joel 2:21.
NOTES on Second Reading :
* 1:1-4 The introduction to this letter
is a reflection on the high point
of God's revelation to humanity that came in his Son. During Old Testament
times divine communication was initiated and maintained by God but it was
fragmentary and carried out in a variety of ways. Finally in these last days,
(Hebrews 1:2) the final age, God's revelation of his saving purpose comes
through His son.
* 1:3-4 Many scholars think that vv 3-4
come from an early Christian liturgical hymn that the author incorporated. Some
think that the hymn started with v 2. The hymn associates the Son with the
personified Wisdom of the Old Testament as the expression of God's glory and
the image of his being (Hebrews 1:3; see also Wisdom 7:26).
* 1:5-14 Jesus' superiority to the angels
is important because of the Jewish traditional belief that angels were
mediators of the covenant. Thus Jesus' superiority to the angels is a sign of
the superiority of the new covenant over the old. The central quotation in
Hebrews 1:7 serves to contrast the angels with the Son. The author quotes it
following the Septuagint translation, which is different in meaning from that
of the Hebrew text ("You make the winds your messengers, and flaming fire
your ministers"). The angels are only sent to serve...those who are to
inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14). Some think that the stages of Jesus'
exaltation which are presented in verses 5 to 13 are modeled on the
enthronement ceremonies in the ancient Near East, especially in Egypt:
elevation to divine status (Hebrews 1:5-6); presentation to the angels and
proclamation of everlasting lordship (Hebrews 1:7-12); enthronement and
conferral of royal power (Hebrews 1:13). The quotations from the Psalms in
Hebrews (1:5,13) were traditionally used of Jesus' messianic sonship (see Acts
13:33) through his resurrection and exaltation (see Acts 2:33-35); those in
Hebrews 11:8,10-12 are concerned with his divine kingship and his creative
function. The reading only includes the beginning of this sequence.
* 1:6 The Greek could also be translated
as "And when he again leads" referring to the parousia.
NOTES on the Gospel:
* 1:1-18 The beginning of John's Gospel,
usually called the prologue, introduces the main themes of the gospel which are
life, light, truth, the world, testimony, and the preexistence of Jesus Christ who
is the incarnate Logos who reveals God the Father. The whole section was
probably an early Christian hymn adapted by the author. Close parallels are
found in Col 1:15-20 and Phil 2:6-11. The central core (John 1:1-5,10-11,14) is
a poem with short phrases in which the last word of one phrase becomes the
first word of the next phrase ("staircase parallelism"). Prose
inserts (at least John 1:6-8,15) were added to the hymn by the gospel writer to
deal with John the Baptist.
* 1:1 The Gospel begins with the first
words of the Old Testament (Genesis 1:1). This verse also brings to mind Wisdom
7:25. The verb, "was," is used three times with three different
meanings in this verse: existence, relationship, and predication. Word or logos
in Greek combines God's dynamic, creative word (Genesis), personified
preexistent Wisdom as the instrument of God's creative activity (Proverbs), and
the ultimate intelligibility of reality (Hellenistic philosophy). The Greek
preposition used in the phrase, "With God," connotes communication
with another. The term "Was God," lacking a definite article with
"God" in Greek signifies predication rather than identification.
* 1:3 The Word is portrayed as the source
of being and life for all of creation and may express a later reaction against
the heresy of Arianism.
* 1:5 The imagery of light and darkness
is common in both biblical and non-biblical literature of the time as well as
in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Also see John 12:35; Wisdom 7:29-30.
* 1:6 Although other references to John
the Baptist in this gospel emphasize the differences between Jesus and John and
the subordinate aspect of John's role, here the similarity between Jesus and
John is emphasized in that John was sent just as Jesus was "sent"
(John 4:34).
* 1:7-8 John is presented as a witness
rather than a messianic figure. The testimony theme introduced here continues
throughout John's gospel and constantly presents Jesus as if He were on trial.
* 1:9 Here "true" means
"real" to indicate a divinely given reality. This sense also occurs
in 4:23; 6:32; 15:1; 17:3; 7:28.
* 1:11 This verse recalls the rejection
of Wisdom in 1 Enoch 42:2 (a popular non-biblical Jewish book).
* 1:13 This may have originally been
meant as a reference to Sir 1:9-10 (1:7-8 in NAB): "He created her in the
Holy Ghost, and saw her, and numbered her, and measured her. And he poured her
out upon all his works, and upon all flesh according to his gift, and hath
given her to them that love him." In John 3:3-8 rebirth is attributed to
the action of the Spirit. See also Wisdom 7:2 and 7.
* 1:14 Here, flesh means the whole
person, and is used probably against the docetic tendencies (See 1 John 4:2; 2
John 1:7). The words translated as "made his dwelling" literally
means, "pitched his tent/tabernacle." This is a reference to the
tabernacle or tent of meeting that was the place of God's presence among his
people (Exodus 25:8-9). The incarnate Word is the new mode of God's presence
among his people. The Greek verb has the same consonants as the Aramaic word
for God's presence (Shekinah). The word, Glory, refers to God's visible
manifestation of majesty in power, which once filled the tabernacle (Exodus
40:34) and the temple (1 Kings 8:10-11,27). This Glory is now centered in
Jesus. Grace and truth are two Old Testament terms describing Yahweh in
covenant relationship with Israel
(see Exodus 34:6), thus God's "love" and "fidelity." The
Word shares Yahweh's covenant qualities.
* 1:15 This verse interrupts John 1:14,16
and seems to be drawn from John 1:30.
* 1:16 The phrase, "grace in place
of grace" refers to replacement of the Old Covenant with the New (see John
1:17). Other possible translations are "grace upon grace"
(accumulation) and "grace for grace" (correspondence).
* 1:17 Here the contrast presented
between Moses and Jesus may suggest that the author meant verse 16 to refer to
the replacement of the old revelation by Jesus.
* 1:18 While the vast majority of later
textual witnesses have another reading, "the Son, the only one" or
"the only Son," the translation here (in the NAB) follows the best
and earliest manuscripts, "monogenes theos," but takes the first term
to mean not just "Only One" but to include a filial relationship with
the Father, as at Luke 9:38 ("only child") or Hebrews 11:17
("only son") and as translated at John 1:14. The Logos is thus
"only Son" and God but not Father/God. Thus the superiority of Jesus
is based upon His relationship with God.
Christmas
Dawn (December 25): The
shepherds praised and glorified God for all they had heard and seen
Meditation: Have you read the news today – the “good
news” of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and son of Mary who was born for us and
for our salvation. The word gospel literally means good news! Jesus' birth in Bethlehem fulfilled the prophecy that the Messiah would
descend from David and be born in David's city, Bethlehem (Isaiah 9:6-7, 11:1-2; Micah
5:2-4).
The
first to hear the good news of the savior's birth were not the rulers and
religious leaders of Israel
who were robed in riches and power. The angels first came to those who
were humble and ready to receive the newborn king who was born in poverty and
was now lying in a manger made for animals. Just as God had chosen and anointed
David, a lowly shepherd of Bethlehem to become
the shepherd king of Israel ,
so Jesus, likewise chose the path of humility and lowliness in coming to Israel as the
good shepherd king who would lay down his life for their sake and salvation.
After the angels had sung their hymn of glory in the presence of the shepherds,
the shepherds made haste to adore the newborn king and sing their hymn of glory
as well.
Many of
the early church fathers have written hymns and homilies in praise of the
Incarnation. John the Monk, an 8th century writer, in his Hymn of the Nativity, sings of
the great exchange in the mystery and wonder of the Incarnation - God becoming
man in order to bring man to heaven:
Heaven and earth are united today, for Christ is born! Today God
has come upon earth, and humankind gone up to heaven. Today, for the sake of
humankind, the invisible one is seen in the flesh. Therefore let us glorify him
and cry aloud: glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace bestowed by your
coming, Savior: glory to you! Today in Bethlehem ,
I hear the angels: glory to God in the highest! Glory to him whose good
pleasure it was that there be peace on earth! The Virgin is now more spacious
than the heavens. Light has shone on those in darkness, exalting the lowly who
sing like the angels: Glory to God in the highest! Beholding him [Adam] who was
in God’s image and likeness fallen through transgression, Jesus bowed the
heavens and came down, without change taking up his dwelling in a virgin womb,
that he might refashion Adam fallen in corruption, and crying out: glory to
your epiphany, my Savior and my God![Stichera (hymn) of the Nativity of the Lord]
Why
was it necessary for the Word of God to become flesh? We needed a savior who
could reconcile us with God. Throughout the ages Christians have professed the
ancient Nicene Creed: "He became man for our sake and for the sake of our
salvation." The eternal Word became flesh for us so he could offer his
life as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world through the shedding of
his blood on the cross. The Word became flesh to show us the infinite love and
tender mercy of God for us sinners. In the feast of Christmas we celebrate
present realities – Jesus Christ our redeemer who reigns in heaven and who also
lives and reigns in our hearts through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit.
And we commemorate past events – the birth of the newborn Messiah King and his
manifestation to Israel
and to the gentile nations. We thank and bless God for the way in which he has
saved us from the power of sin and the curse of death and destruction by
sending his son to ransom us and give us pardon and abundant life through the
gift and working of the Holy Spirit. Today we celebrate the birthday of our
King and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
God
wants to fill our hearts anew with joy and gratitude for the greatest gift he
could possibly give us – his beloved son Jesus. What can we give thanks for in
this great feast of the Incarnation? We can praise and thank God our Father for
the fact that the Son of God freely and joyfully assumed a human nature in
order to accomplish our salvation in it. Jesus came to release the captives
from slavery to sin and to open the gates of paradise once again. This day the
Holy Spirit invites us to make haste – as the shepherds of Bethlem did – to
adore Jesus our King and Messiah. The Lord Jesus Christ is our eternal
good shepherd who guides and cares for us unceasingly and who gives us abundant
everlasting life and union with the triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
This day the whole community of heaven joins with all believers of good will on
earth in a jubilant song of praise for the good news proclaimed by the angels
on Christmas eve:Behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will
come to all the people, for to you is born this day in the city of David a
Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:10-11).
The joy
of Christmas is not for a day or a season. It is an eternal joy, a joy that no
one can take from us because it is the joy of Jesus Christ himself made present
in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us (see Romans 5:2-5).
The Lord gives us a supernatural joy which no pain nor sorrow can diminish, and
which neither life nor death can take away. Do you know the joy of your
salvation in Jesus Christ?
"Lord
our God, with the birth of your Son, your glory breaks on the world. As we
celebrate his first coming, give us a foretaste of the joy that you will grant
us when the fulness of his glory has filled the earth."
