clashes between riot police and demonstrators leave many dead, wounded or
arrested .

Pope Francis prayed for our Ecuadorian brothers and sisters
on Monday morning, entrusting the souls of those who have been killed in recent
unrest to Our Lady.
During the moment of prayer that opens the morning session
at the Synod of Bishops on the Amazon, the Pope said he entrusts the suffering
people of Ecuador to “Our Mother”.
He prayed for those “who have been killed in these days,
those who have been wounded, persecuted and arrested.”
“May she bring peace and accompany us in this moment of
suffering, especially for the indigenous people of Ecuador,” he said.
Pope Francis’ prayer for Ecuador comes on the heels of his
appeal on Sunday, in which he said he is “following with concern” the
socio-political unrest in the country and encouraged those involved to “seek
social peace, with particular attention towards the most vulnerable and respect
for human rights.”
Ecuador's President said he struck a deal late on Sunday
with indigenous leaders who have mobilized thousands of protesters against a
decree that slashed fuel subsidies, agreeing to replace it with one that does
more to help the most needy.
At least 5 people have died in Ecuador since protests began
12 days ago and dozens have been wounded and arrested.
