Pope
Francis to send envoy to Zambia
Pope
Francis will early next month send Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary
for the Relations with States of the Holy See to pay an official visit to
Zambia
Archbishop
Gallagher will be in Zambia from 7 to 10 November 2015. This was revealed in a
communiqué by the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia and Malawi, Archbishop Julio Murat
after he paid a courtesy call on Zambian President, Edgar Lungu at the Zambian
state house.
Archbishop
Gallagher will visit Zambia to be part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of
the establishment of diplomatic Relations between the Holy See and the Republic
of Zambia.
Archbishop
Murat assured the Zambian President that, "The Catholic Church was ready
to contribute towards the growth of the spiritual and human development of
Zambian citizens, without distinction.”
Soon
after Zambia’s independence in 1964, the Holy See established diplomatic
relations with Zambia in 1965. The first Nuncio appointed to Zambia was
Archbishop Alfredo Poledrini who died in 1980 as Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus to
Lesotho.
