Pope’s upcoming itinerary in Myanmar and Bangladesh
Pope Francis on Wednesday (Nov. 29) is on his second full
day of his apostolic visit to Myanmar - the first leg of his 21st foreign visit
outside Italy, that will take him to Bangladesh on Thursday.
The Pope arrived in Yangon on Monday after over a 10-hour
flight from Rome.
Tuesday (Nov. 28) morning he had an unscheduled meeting with
17 leaders of Myanmar’s religious communities at Archbishop’s House in Yangon.
In the afternoon, he flew to Myanmar’s new capital, Nay Pyi Taw where he was
given a state welcome at the presidential palace. The Pope then paid a courtesy
visit to the president, Htin Kyaw, met State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and
then addressed the authorities, members of the civil society and the diplomatic
corps.
Pope Francis then flew back to Yangon where he rested at the
Archbishop’s House.
Wednesday, Nov. 29, Pope Francis celebrated an open-air Mass
in the morning at the Kyaikkasan Ground and delivered a homily. From
there, he returned to the Archbishop’s House where he lunched. In the afternoon
he was to hold a meeting with the Sangha, the Supreme Council of Buddhist Monks
at the Kava Aye Centre. His last appointment of Wednesday is a meeting
with the bishops of Myanmar in the evening.
