"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men ofNineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,

Meditation: "This is an evil generation; it
seeks a sign"
The Lord Jesus came to set us free from slavery to sin and hurtful desires. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit he pours his love into our hearts that we may understand his will for our lives and walk in his way of holiness. God searches our hearts, not to condemn us, but to show us where we need his saving grace and help. He calls us to seek him with true repentance, humility, and the honesty to see our sins for what they really are – a rejection of his love and will for our lives. God will transform us if we listen to his word and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and to increase your thirst for his wisdom. James says thatthe wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (James 3:17). A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single of heart desire one thing alone – God's pleasure. God wants us to delight in him and to know the freedom of his truth and love. Do you thirst for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)?

Jesus, give me a heart that loves what is good and in accord with your will and
fill me with your wisdom that I my understand your ways. Give me the grace and
the courage to reject whatever is evil and contrary to your will."

LUKE 11:29-32

KEY VERSE: "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah" (v 29).
READING : When the people demanded a sign from Jesus as
proof that his miracles were genuine, he accused them of
lacking faith. He declared that the only sign he would give them would be the
sign of Jonah's "death and
resurrection" from the belly of a fish (Jonah
2). When Jonah was sent
to preach to Nineveh in Assyria (Israel 's enemy), the prophet was astonished when these
pagan people repented and turned toward God (Jon 3:1-10). Jesus was a prophet
greater than Jonah, yet the Gentiles were more receptiveto his message than were his
own people. Jesus noted that the Queen of Sheba had come from afar to learn the
wisdom of King Solomon (1 Kgs 10:1-10). In contrast, Jesus, the wisdom of God, was spurned and rejected even though he came from God to offer
them the gift of eternal life.
REFLECTING: Am I like Jonah, reluctant to speak God's words to unbelievers?

of Teresa of Jesus, virgin and doctor of the Church
Saint Teresa of �vila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, was the daughter of a Spanish noble. Crippled by disease in her youth led to her being well educated at home. She was cured after prayer toSt. Joseph .
Her mother died when Teresa was 12, and she prayed to Our Lady to mother her. Sheentered a Carmelite house at 17,
soon after taking her vows as a Carmelite, Teresa became gravely ill, and never
fully recovered her health. She began receiving visions, and was examined by
Dominicans and Jesuits, including St. Francis Borgia, who pronounced the
visions to be holy and true. She considered her original house too lax in its
rule, and she became determined to found a new
convent that went back to the basics of a contemplative order: a simple life of
poverty devoted to prayer. Soon she had postulants clamoring to get into her
reform convents. Many people wanted to learn about prayer from her and her
ideas swept not only through Spain
but all of Europe . She is the founder of the
Discalced Carmelites. She founded several otherhouses,
often against fierce opposition from local authorities. Teresa also set
up two houses for men who wished to adopt the reforms. John of the Cross and
Anthony of Jesus helped with this. She died in 1582. Her last words were:
"O My Lord and my Spouse, the hour that I have longed for has come. It is
time to meet one another." In 1970 she was declared a Doctor of the Church
by Pope Paul VI for her writing
and teaching on prayer, along with Saint Catherine of Siena , making
them the first women to be awarded the distinction. Her books include her
autobiography, The Life of
Teresa of Jesus, The Interior
Castle, as well as her other important work The Way of Perfection.

‘There is
something greater than Jonah here.’Reading today’s gospel, we can be struck by the frustration Jesus must have felt in his preaching. The people kept wanting, as we sometimes do, some sign which would prove to them in a spectacular way that Jesus was the Son of God. In exasperation, Jesus quotes the example of the Ninevites, those non-believers who quickly recognised God’s call to them in Jonah’s preaching.
The people Jesus addresses are those especially chosen by God as his people, and yet they cannot recognise God’s voice in his words. What about us? Do we need some spectacular sign to be convinced that God is present in our lives, or are we content with the faith—whether weak or strong—we have in our hearts?
Let us pray today that the Holy Spirit will strengthen our own belief and the belief of our fellow Christians.

LIGHT IN THE
DARKNESS - THE CHRISTIAN AS LAMPLIGHTER
At the Valete
Mass [2002] I reminded the boys and their parents that in the time before there
were electric lights on our city streets, a person would have the responsibility
of being the lamplighter and lighting the gas lamps at dusk and extinguishing
them before dawn. Going down one street and up another, he would have people
watching him doing his work. They would watch him until the sun went down and
could not see him any more. But they could see new light come forth.
This is for
me a wonderful image of what a Christian life is all about and what lies behind
this challenge for all of us. Those who are Christians continue to light new
lights and we can follow their path by the lights they have left behind. They
become for us a light in the darkness. A true Christian, therefore, is one
whose track you can follow by the light he or she leaves burning.
In all the
darkness of stories about Bali, the gunman at Monash
University , and the sniper in Washington , we need to
remember that we are meant to be a light of hope in our world. The way we care
for other people, the way we affirm and encourage them, is our way of being a
lamplighter. Each time you
light a
candle, you might remember your role as a lamplighter and the beautiful prayer
which is used in Salisbury Cathedral, England that reads:
Lighting a
candle is a prayer;
When we have
gone it stays alight
Kindling in
the hearts and minds
Of others the
prayers
We have
already offered for them and for others
For the sad,
the sick, and the suffering and prayers of thankfulness too.
Lighting a

Teresa lived in an age of exploration
as well as political, social and religious upheaval. It was the 16th century, a
time of turmoil and reform. She was born before the Protestant Reformation
and died almost 20 years after the closing of the Council of Trent.
The
gift of God to Teresa in and through which she became holy and left her mark on
the Church and the world is threefold: She was a woman; she was a
contemplative; she was an active reformer.As a woman, Teresa stood on her own two feet, even in the man's world of her time. She was "her own woman," entering the Carmelites despite strong opposition from her father. She is a person wrapped not so much in silence as in mystery. Beautiful, talented, outgoing, adaptable, affectionate, courageous, enthusiastic, she was totally human. Like Jesus, she was a mystery of paradoxes: wise, yet practical; intelligent, yet much in tune with her experience; a mystic, yet an energetic reformer. A holy woman, a womanly woman.
Teresa was a woman "for God," a woman of prayer, discipline and compassion. Her heart belonged to God. Her ongoing conversion was an arduous lifelong struggle, involving ongoing purification and suffering. She was misunderstood, misjudged, opposed in her efforts at reform. Yet she struggled on, courageous and faithful; she struggled with her own mediocrity, her illness, her opposition. And in the midst of all this she clung to God in life and in prayer. Her writings on prayer and contemplation are drawn from her experience: powerful, practical and graceful. A woman of prayer; a woman for God.
Teresa was a woman "for others." Though a contemplative, she spent much of her time and energy seeking to reform herself and the Carmelites, to lead them back to the full observance of the primitive Rule. She founded over a half-dozen new monasteries. She traveled, wrote, fought—always to renew, to reform. In her self, in her prayer, in her life, in her efforts to reform, in all the people she touched, she was a woman for others, a woman who inspired and gave life.
Her writings, especially the Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle, have helped generations of believers.
In 1970, the Church gave her the title she had long held in the popular mind: doctor of the Church. She and St. Catherine of

Ours is a time of turmoil, a time of reform and a time of liberation. Modern women have in Teresa a challenging example. Promoters of renewal, promoters of prayer, all have in Teresa a woman to reckon with, one whom they can admire and imitate.

Known to her family as
Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada, she became the reformer of Carmel, mother of the
Discalced Carmelite nuns and friars, "spiritual mother" (as is
engraved under her statue in the Vatican Basilica), patron of Catholic writers
(from 1965) and Doctor of the Church (1970), the first woman with Saint
Catherine of Siena to ever receive this last title. She was born at Avila in Castile ,
Spain , on 28th March 1515
and died in Alba de Tormes, near Salamanca ,
on 4th October 1582 (a correction due to the Gregorian reform of the calendar
that year, as the following day was officially 15th October). She was beatified
in 1614, canonised in 1622 and her feast day occurs on 15th October.
Her life needs to be understood in the light of the plan which God had for her, with the great desires experienced in her heart, with the mysterious illness to which she was subject in her youth (and with the ill health from which she suffered throughout her life), and with the "resistance" to divine grace for which she blamed herself more than she should has. Running away from home, she entered the
In 1560, the idea first emerged of a new Carmel, where the Rule could be followed more closely, and this was realized two years later when the monastery of St. Joseph was founded without any endowments and "following the Primitive Rule": a phrase that needs to be clearly understood because both then and later it was a notion which was more nostalgic and "heroic" than practical. Five years later Teresa obtained from the Prior General of the Order, John Baptist Rossi, then visiting Spain, permission to increase the number of monasteries and a licence to found two communities of contemplative Carmelite friars (later to be called Discalced) who would be the spiritual counterparts of the nuns and, as such, able to help them. At the death of Saint Teresa, there were 17 monasteries of nuns in the Reform, and the communities of friars also quickly outstripped the original number, some founded with permission from the Prior General Rossi but others, especially those in Andalusia, established against his will, relying on the approval of the apostolic visitators, the Dominican Vargas and the young Discalced Carmelite Jerome Gracian (a close spiritual companion of Teresa, for whom she vowed to do whatever he asked her, as long as it was not contrary to God's law).
There followed a series of unedifying quarrels, made worse by the interference of the civil authorities and other outsiders, until in 1581, the Discalced were formed into a separate Province. Saint Teresa was then able to write, "Now all of us, Discalced and Calced, are at peace and nothing can hinder us from serving the Lord".
Saint Teresa is among the most important figures of all time for Catholic spirituality. Her works - especially the four best known (The Life, The Way of Perfection, The Mansions and The Foundations) - together with her more historical works, contain a doctrine which encompasses the whole of the spiritual life, from the first steps right up to intimacy with God at the centre of the Interior Castle. Her Letters show her occupied with a great variety of everyday problems. Her doctrine on the unity of the soul with God (a doctrine which was intimately lived by her) follows the Carmelite tradition which had preceded her and to which she herself contributed in such a notable way, enriching it as well as passing the tradition on, not only to her spiritual sons and daughters, but also to the whole Church which she served so unsparingly. When she was dying, her one joy was to be able to affirm that "I die a daughter of the Church".

3) Reflection
• The Gospel today
presents a very hard accusation of Jesus against the Pharisees and the Scribes.
They wanted Jesus to give them a sign, because they did not believe in the
signs and in the miracles which he was working. This accusation of Jesus
continues in the Gospels of the following days. In meditating on these Gospels
we have to be very attentive not to generalize the accusation of Jesus as if it
were addressed to the Hebrew people. In the past, the lack of this attention,
unfortunately contributed to increase anti- Semitism in us Christians, which
has caused so much harm to humanity throughout the centuries. Instead of
pointing out the finger against the Pharisees of the time of Jesus, it is
better to look at ourselves in the mirror of the texts to discover in them the
Pharisee which lives hidden in our Church and in each one of us, and who merits
this criticism from Jesus.
• Luke 11, 29-30: The
sign of Jonah. “At that time, the people crowed and Jesus began to say: This is
an evil generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is
the sign of Jonah”. The Gospel of Matthew says that it was the Scribes and the
Pharisees who were asking for a sign (Mt 12, 38). They wanted Jesus to work a
sign for them, a miracle, in such a way that they could become aware if he was
the one sent by God, as they imagined. They wanted Jesus to submit himself to
their criteria. They wanted to fit him in to the framework of their own idea of
the Messiah. In them there was no openness for a possible conversion. But Jesus
did not submit himself to their request. The Gospel of Mark says that Jesus,
before the request of the Pharisees, Jesus sighed profoundly (Mk 8, 12),
probably because he was upset and sad in the face of such blindness; because it
serves nothing to try to show a beautiful picture to a person who does not want
to open the eyes. The only sign that will be given is the sign of Jonah. “For
just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh , so will the Son of man be a sign to
this generation “. How will this sign of the Son of man be? The Gospel of
Matthew responds: “For as Jonah remained in the belly of the sea-monster for
three days and three nights, so will the Son of man be in the heart of the
earth for three days and three nights” (Mt 12, 40). The only sign will be the
resurrection of Jesus. This is the sign which will be given in the future to
the Scribes and the Pharisees. Jesus, who was condemned to death by them and to
death on the cross, will rise from the dead by God and will continue to
resurrect in many ways in those who believe in him. The sign which converts is
not the miracles but the witness of life!
• Luke 11, 31: Salomon
and the Queen of the South. The reference to the conversion of the people of Nineveh associates and
recalls the conversion of the Queen of the South: “The Queen of the South will
stand up against this generation and be their condemnation; because she came
from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look, there is
something greater than Solomon here”. This reminder almost occasional of the
episode of the Queen of the South who recognizes the wisdom of Solomon, shows
how the Bible was used at that time. It was by association. The principal rule
for the interpretation was this one: “The Bible is explained by the Bible”. Up
until now, this is one of the more important norms for the interpretation of
the Bible, especially for the Reading
of the Word of God, in a climate of prayer.
• Luke 11, 32: And
Look there is something greater than Solomon here. After the digression on
Solomon and on the Queen of the South, Jesus returns to speak about the sign of
Jonah: “The men of Nineveh
will appear against this generation and be its condemnation, because when Jonah
preached they repented”. The people of Nineveh
were converted because of the witness of the preaching of Jonah and he
denounces the unbelief of the Scribes and of the Pharisees. Because “something
greater than Jonah is here”. Jesus is greater than Jonah, greater than Solomon.
For us Christians, he is the principal key for Scripture (2Co 3, 14-18).
4) Personal questions
• Jesus criticizes the
Scribes and the Pharisees who managed to deny the evidence, rendering
themselves incapable to recognize the call of God in the events. And we
Christians today, and I, do we deserve the same criticism of Jesus?
• Níneveh was
converted because of the preaching of Jonah. The Scribes and the Pharisees were
not converted. Today, the calls of reality cause changes and conversions in
people in the whole world: the ecological threat, urbanization that
dehumanizes, consumerism which standardizes and alienates, injustice, violence,
etc. Many Christians live far away from these calls of God which come from
reality.
