US
Congressman on papal address to Congress
(Vatican Radio) U.S. Congressman Jim Himes from
Connecticut says he expects Pope Francis’ historic address to both houses of
the U.S. Congress “to stir up a bit of controversy” but we should “embrace”
this. In an interview with Vatican Radio’s Chris Altieri, Himes said he is
“thrilled” that “history is being made” with this first ever speech by a Pope
to both houses of the U.S. Congress. He describes the Pope as “a figure of
great moral authority” whose appeal cuts “across the political spectrum.”
Noting that Pope
Francis has made statements about the way we should live in the world with
respect to the environment, Congressman Himes applauds the Pope for being a
moral leader who is willing “to take some risks and stir things up a bit.”
