God’s temple in
heaven was opened,
and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple.
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet,
and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.
Then another sign appeared in the sky;
it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns,
and on its heads were seven diadems.
Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky
and hurled them down to the earth.
Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth,
to devour her child when she gave birth.
She gave birth to a son, a male child,
destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.
Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
The woman herself fled into the desert
where she had a place prepared by God.
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed.”

to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Meditation: "For
with God nothing will be impossible"
Do
you want to live a grace-filled life? The angel Gabriel salutes Mary as
"full of grace". To become the mother of the Savior, Mary was
enriched by God with gifts to enable her to assume this awesome role. There is
a venerable tradition among many Christians, dating back to the early church,
for honoring Mary as the spotless virgin who bore the Son of God in her womb. A
number of early church fathers link Mary's obedience to this singular grace of
God. "Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for
the whole human race" (Irenaeus, 2nd century). "The knot of Eve's
disobedience was united by Mary's obedience: what the virgin Eve bound through
her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith" (Ireneaus, 2nd century).
What
is the key that can unlock the power and grace of God’s kingdom in our personal
lives? Faith and obedience for sure! When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they
immediately experienced the consequence of their action – separation from the
God who loved them. God in his mercy promised them a Redeemer who would pay the
price for their sin and the sin of the world. We see the marvelous unfolding of
God's plan of redemption in the events leading up to the Incarnation, the birth
of the Messiah. Mary's prompt response of "yes" to the divine message
is a model of faith for all believers. Mary believed God's promises even when
they seemed impossible. She was full of grace because she trusted that what God
said was true and would be fulfilled. She was willing and eager to do God's
will, even if it seemed difficult or costly. God gives us grace and he expects
us to respond with the same willingness, obedience, and heart-felt trust as
Mary did. When God commands he also gives the grace, strength, and means to
respond. We can either yield to his grace or resist and go our own way. Do you
believe in God's promises and do you yield to his grace?
"Heavenly
Father, you offer us abundant grace, mercy, and forgiveness through your Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ. Help me to live a grace-filled life as Mary did by
believing in your promises and by giving you my unqualified "yes" to
your will and to your plan for my life."

Introductory Prayer: Lord, I know by faith that these are some of
the most important moments of my day. I freely open my mind, heart and will
for you to do as you please, because I know you can desire and do only what
is good for me. I know that you will give me the grace to do whatever you ask
of me and that you will always accompany me. That is enough for me.
Petition: Lord, give me the grace to do your holy
will.
1. Pleasing God through the Small, Daily
Tasks: The angel Gabriel
finds Mary doing nothing extraordinary, but rather doing ordinary tasks like
washing clothes, sweeping, getting water, doing the same daily prayer as
every devout Jew. But in doing the ordinary she is doing what is pleasing to
God. Her example should be our guide. Work can be an ordinary means of
holiness. Man, as Blessed John Paul II said, “not only transforms nature,
adapting it to his own needs, but he also achieves fulfillment as
a human being and indeed, in a sense, becomes ‘more a human being’” (Laborem
Exercens, no. 9). We please God when we do our duties, fulfill our
responsibilities, work to meet our basic needs. While we may not be doing
something extraordinary at every moment, we still praise and glorify God when
we undertake the ordinary with love. If an angel were to come looking for me,
would he find me doing my daily tasks lovingly?
2. “Do Not Be Afraid!” - Mary “was greatly troubled and pondered what
sort of greeting this might be.” When God presents us with his plan, we too
might be afraid. We may not fully understand what he has in mind. It can seem
that his plan is too great for us. But when God wants something from us, he
shows us that it is not beyond our reach. As with Mary at the Incarnation,
God will make it happen and will provide all the grace necessary for its
completion.
3. “May It Be Done to Me According to Your
Word” - When Gabriel
clarifies Mary’s mission and illustrates that with God all things are
possible, Mary makes an act of faith. Her act of faith is what the Second
Vatican Council terms the ‘obedience of faith’. The obedience of faith “is to
be given to God who reveals, an obedience by which man commits his whole self
freely to God, offering the full submission of intellect and will to God who
reveals, and freely assenting to the truth revealed by Him” (Dei
Verbum, 5). God supplied Mary with his grace and did not abandon her; nor
will he abandon us. When we do what God wants and cooperate with his plan, he
will support us. He will accompany us as we carry out his will and bring his
plan to fulfillment. God’s will is our holiness, and when we do his will we
help God to make us saints.
Conversation with Mary: Mary, teach me how to do God’s will as you
did, so that I can remain in his company. I want to do his will, even though
at times I know that it may seem difficult or impossible. Ask your son for
the grace of perseverance for me so that I, too, may cooperate with the Lord,
whether he is asking something of me that is ordinary or extraordinary.
Resolution: In a difficult situation, I will pray a
“Hail Mary,” asking Mary for help in being faithful.

The Lord is kind and merciful; slow to anger, and rich in
compassion
Do not be afraid, I will help you.God promised strength to Israel. The late Marie Colvin lived like that. A fearless American war correspondent, for the Sunday Times, London, from 1985 until her death, she bore witness to the reality and human tragedy of war, especially its effect on civilians. She spoke for those who have no voice. In 1999, in East Timor, 1500 women and children were besieged in the UN. When all 22 of her colleagues left, Marie remained with an unarmed UN force, reporting on their plight until all were evacuated to safety. In Sri Lanka, in 2001, struck by shrapnel, she lost her left eye, wearing a black eye-patch from then on. In 2012, reporting from the beleaguered city of Homs, she was targeted by Syrian shells and killed. Jesus, give us all such courage.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe
The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th
century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story.
A poor
Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was
a 57-year-old widower and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On
Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to
attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.
He was
walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the
warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared and within it a young Native
American maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his
own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de
Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady
appeared.
Eventually
the bishop told Juan Diego to have the lady give him a sign. About this same
time Juan Diego’s uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Diego to try to
avoid the lady. The lady found Diego, nevertheless, assured him that his uncle
would recover and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or
tilma.
When Juan
Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground
and the bishop sank to his knees. On Juan Diego’s tilma appeared an image of
Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. It was December 12,
1531.
Comment:
Mary's appearance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a powerful reminder that Mary and the God who sent her accept all peoples. In the context of the sometimes rude and cruel treatment of the Indians by the Spaniards, the apparition was a rebuke to the Spaniards and an event of vast significance for Native Americans. While a number of them had converted before this incident, they now came in droves. According to a contemporary chronicler, nine million Indians became Catholic in a very short time. In these days when we hear so much about God's preferential option for the poor, Our Lady of Guadalupe cries out to us that God's love for and identification with the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself.

2nd Week of Advent
1) Opening prayer
Lord our God,
you do not abandon those who rely on you.
Take us by the hand when we are afraid,
help us when we call out to you,
for we experience that we are powerless
to establish your kingdom of justice and love.
Send your Son again among us today
to be our Lord and Saviour
now and for ever.
2) Gospel Reading - Matthew 11, 11-15
'In truth I tell you, of all the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he. Since John the Baptist came, up to this present time, the kingdom of Heaven has been subjected to violence and the violent are taking it by storm.
Because it was towards John that all the prophecies of the prophets and of the Law were leading; and he, if you will believe me, is the Elijah who was to return. Anyone who has ears should listen!
3) Reflection
• In today’s Gospel, Jesus, gives an opinion on John the Baptist. Compared with the persons of the Old Testament, there is no one greater than John. John is the greatest of all: greater than Jeremiah, greater than Abraham, greater than Isaiah! But, compared with the New Testament, John is inferior to all. The smallest in the Kingdom is greater than John! How can we understand this qualification, apparently contradictory, that Jesus makes of John?
• A short time before, John had sent to ask Jesus: “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?” (Mt 11, 3). John seemed to have some doubt concerning Jesus. Jesus, in fact, did not correspond to the idea that he, John, had of the Messiah, a severe Judge who had to come to carry out the judgment of condemnation and of anger (Mt 3, 7). He was to cut the trees from their roots (Mt 3, 10), was to clear his threshing floor and throw the dry stick into the fire (Mt 3, 12). But Jesus, instead of being a severe judge, is the friend of all, “meek and humble of heart” (Mt 11, 29), he receives the sinners and eats with them (Mt 2, 16).
• Jesus responds to John by quoting the Prophet Isaiah: “Go back and tell John what you hear and see; the blind see again, and the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin diseases are cleaned, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life and the good news is proclaimed to the poor, and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of falling!” (Mt 11, 5-6; cf. Is 33, 5-6; 29, 18). A hard response. Jesus asks John to analyze the Scripture better in order to be able to change the erroneous vision that he had of the Messiah.
• John was great! The greatest of all! And the smallest in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than John. John is the greatest, because he was the last echo of the Old Testament. It was John who, because of his fidelity, was finally able to indicate the Messiah to the people: “Behold, here is the Lamb of God!” (Jn 1, 36), and the long history begun with Abraham attains its objective. But John was not capable to understand by himself the importance of the Kingdom of God in Jesus. He had a doubt: “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?” The ancient history alone, does not communicate sufficient light to the person to understand all the novelty of the Good News of God which Jesus brings to us. The New was not in the Old. Saint Augustine said: “Novum in Vetere latet, Vetus in Novo patet”, which means: “The New is already hidden in the Old. But the Old reveals only its full meaning in the New”. The one who is with Jesus and lives with him receives from him a light which gives new eyes to discover a more profound meaning in the Old. And which is this novelty?
• Jesus offers a key: “The Law and all the Prophets, in fact, have prophesized up to John. And if you would accept it, he is that Elijah who has to come. He who has ears, let him hear!” Jesus does not explain, but says: “He who has ears, let him hear” Elijah had to come to prepare the coming of the Messiah and to reconstruct the community: “To reconcile parents to their children and children to their parents” (Mal 3, 24). John announced the Messiah and sought to reconstruct the community (Lk 1, 17). But the most profound mystery escaped him, that of the life of the community. Only Jesus communicated it, announcing that God is Father and, therefore, we are all brothers and sisters. This announcement bears within a new force which makes us capable to overcome divergence and to create community.
• These are the violent who succeed to conquer the Kingdom. The Kingdom is not a doctrine, but a new way of living like brothers and sisters, beginning from the announcement which Jesus makes: God is Father of all.
4) Personal questions
• The Kingdom is of those who use violence on themselves, that is, it belongs to those who like Jesus have the courage to create community. You also?

5) Concluding Prayer
I will extol you, O my God and King,
and I will bless your name forever and ever.
The Lord is good to all
and compassionate toward all his works. (Ps 145)
